Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground pork or beef, breadcrumbs, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, minced garlic, grated ginger, egg, sesame oil, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Heat a heavy skillet over medium-high heat and drizzle in 1-2 tablespoons of neutral oil. Add the meatballs in batches and sear for about 3-4 minutes on each side.
  3. Lower the heat to medium and clean out the skillet if necessary. Pour in hoisin sauce, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and 2-3 tablespoons of water, stirring. Let simmer for about 3-5 minutes until thickened.
  4. Return the meatballs to the skillet and gently toss in the sauce. Cover and simmer for 4-6 minutes.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together scallions, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and sugar until sugar dissolves. Set aside.
  6. Plate the meatballs and drizzle with the scallion sauce, garnishing with extra chopped scallions before serving.
