Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease an 8x8-inch baking dish with oil or non-stick spray.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the water and unsulphured molasses, stirring until well dissolved.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ground ginger, ground cloves, and salt.
  4. Make three wells in the mixed dry ingredients and pour vanilla extract and apple cider vinegar into two of the smaller wells, then pour the canola or vegetable oil into the larger well.
  5. Pour the molasses-water mixture over the dry ingredients and mix gently until just combined.
  6. Transfer the batter into the prepared baking dish, smoothing the top, and bake for 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.
