Ingredients

For the Herb Garlic Butter
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter Adds richness and creaminess; substitute with olive oil for a lighter option.
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh Dill Imparts fresh flavor to the butter; parsley or cilantro can be used as substitutes if needed.
  • 3 cloves Garlic Cloves Delivers aromatic depth; garlic powder works as a substitute in a pinch.
For the Sandwich
  • 1 pound Steak (Ribeye) The star ingredient; can swap for NY strip or top sirloin.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Enhances overall flavor; adjust according to personal taste preferences.
  • 1 large Yellow Onion Adds sweetness and texture when caramelized; shallots offer a milder alternative.
  • 4 slices Havarti Cheese Melts beautifully; consider provolone or mozzarella for different textures.
  • 1 baguette Baguette Provides a crunchy exterior and soft interior; sourdough or ciabatta make great alternatives.

Equipment

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine softened unsalted butter with crushed garlic cloves and finely diced fresh dill. Blend until smooth to create herb garlic butter.
  2. Chill the ribeye steak in the freezer for 30 minutes to firm it up. Remove and cut into thin strips against the grain.
  3. Heat a skillet over high heat, add oil, and sear the steak strips for 2-3 minutes until browned. Let the steak rest.
  4. In the same skillet, lower the heat and sauté the sliced yellow onions for 8-10 minutes until soft and golden brown.
  5. Slice the baguette lengthwise, spread herb garlic butter on both sides, layer with steak strips, caramelized onions, and Havarti cheese.
  6. Preheat broiler to high, place sandwich on a baking sheet and broil for about 2 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Remove from broiler, let cool briefly, slice, and serve warm.
