Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C) and grease a pie plate. Line with pie crust and freeze while preparing filling.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, oats, and ½ tsp of cinnamon. Mix in diced butter until resembling coarse crumbs.
  3. Peel, core, and slice apples into thin wedges. Soak in a lemon-infused water mixture for 10 minutes to prevent browning.
  4. In a skillet, melt 3 tbsp of butter, add apples, ¼ cup sugar, and ¼ tsp cinnamon. Sauté for about 10 minutes until tender.
  5. In a mixing bowl, whisk ¾ cup sugar, cornstarch, salt, eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla until smooth.
  6. Layer the cooked apples in the pie crust, pour custard over them, and sprinkle crumble topping evenly.
  7. Cover pie with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then remove foil and bake for another 25-30 minutes until firm.
  8. Allow pie to cool for at least 30 minutes before serving warm or at room temperature.
