Step-by-Step Instructions

  2. Core each baking apple, ensuring the bottom remains intact. Rinse and dry the apples, then place upright in the baking dish.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine old-fashioned oats, brown sugar, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt. Stir until well combined.
  4. Add the softened salted butter to the oat mixture and blend until crumbly.
  5. Stuff the cored apples with the oatmeal mixture, packing it firmly and allowing some to mound on top.
  6. Arrange the stuffed apples in the baking dish and add a splash of water to the bottom to create steam while baking.
  7. Bake the apples for 50 minutes, or until tender and the filling is golden brown.
  8. In a saucepan, combine milk, granulated sugar, and egg yolks. Stir over medium heat until thickened. Remove from heat and add vanilla extract.
